Social Prescription for healthcare – An alternative

The College of Medicine has partnered with ITN Productions to launch ‘Creating a Healthy Future,’ a thought-provoking news and current affairs-style programme exploring alternative ways to improve the public’s health and wellbeing, from social prescription to nutrition.

Social prescribing is gathering pace and receiving widespread recognition from patients, professionals and politicians.  In this flagship programme, national newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky invites commentary from those at the forefront of progressive health practices to broaden the definition of healthcare and encourage the current and future generation of clinicians to consider looking beyond prescription pills and processes to a more expansive palette of self-care treatments and services that could improve patient outcomes.

In an interview, Dr Michael Dixon, founder of the College of Medicine and social prescription champion, explains the benefits of social prescribing and outlines the changes and support needed for the medical profession to bring lifestyle medicines to the mainstream.

Drawing upon ITN’s 60-year heritage and expertise in storytelling, ‘Creating a Healthy Future,’ combines a series of authoritative interviews, reports, case studies and sponsored profiles from leading organisations who are innovating within the fields of sustainable healthcare: Viridian Nutrition, Flora, Later Living At Legal and General, Sano and Childs Farm.
